Radioactive Iodine as an Indicator in Thyroid
نویسنده
چکیده
The use of radioactive iodine as an indicator in thyroid physiology has been described by Hertz, Roberts and Evans (1) and by Hertz, Roberts, Means and Evans (2, 3). Hamilton and Soley (4) have published data obtained by the use of radioactive iodine on goiter patients of several types. We have administered radioactive iodine (mainly the 8-day isotope I's1), obtained by bombarding tellurium with deuterons in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology cyclotron, to 22 patients with Graves' disease and to 2 normal individuals. By this means we have investigated the absorption and excretion of labelled doses of iodine of various sizes, administered at various times during the course of pre-operative iodinization and at various intervals before operation. In addition, the amount of iodine taken up by the thyroid and the distribution of the labelled iodine between the iodine-containing fractions of the thyroid have been determined in 19 cases.

The standard therapy for thyroid cancer is total or near total thyroidectomy, followed by the administration of radioactive iodine for remnant ablation or residual disease. Patients with radioiodine therapy are predisposed to second malignant neoplasms in organs such as central nervous system (CNS), breast, prostate, kidney, bone marrow, salivary gland, and digestive tract. Exposure to carcinog...

Introduction: Nowadays, radioisotopes have a lot of therapeutic and diagnostic applications in nuclear medicine. The technetium-99m radioisotope is widely used in the diagnostic field. The technetium-99m radioisotope is widely used in the diagnostic field. In this study, in order to increase the absorption dose in thyroid cancer cells, the radioactive drug technetium-99m which ...

Objective(s): The aim of this study was to determine whether high-dose radioactive iodine (Na131I) outpatient treatment of patients with thyroid carcinoma is a pragmatically safe approach, particularly for the safety of caregivers. Methods: A total of 79 patients completed the radiation-safety questionnaires prior to receiving high-dose radioactive iodine treatment. The questionnaire studied th...
متن کاملCalculation of beta absorbed fractions for iodine isotopes in ellipsoidal thyroid lobe
Background: The thyroid gland absorbs nearly all the iodine in the blood, independently of its isotopic composition. When a large enough activity of radioactive iodine like 131I, 132I, 133I is taken into the body, it can destroy the healthy thyroid gland cells as well as the cancer’s cells. In fact, as it is well known, some isotopes of iodine are used not only for acquiring thyroid image...

Objective(s): We investigated a frequency of lower extremity uptake on the radioactive iodine (RAI) whole body scan (WBS) after RAI treatment in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, in order to retrospectively examine whether or not the frequency was pathological. Methods: This retrospective study included 170 patients with thyroid cancer, undergoing RAI treatment. Overall, 99r (58%) an...
